Dear Reader,
As humans, we are intrinsically frightened by the idea of uncertainty. A loud sound, an unexplainable smell, an impenetrable darkness- all of these scenarios create their horror through exploiting the unknown. A lack of information leads our minds to the most ludicrous of conclusions, and yet, even if we recognize their absurdity- does the chance that they might be true not haunt us, nevertheless?
It is this revelation that makes the fear of the ocean particularly sensible. Despite our many advances as the human race, we have yet to figure out what lies at the very bottom of the seas’ deepest trenches, enshrouding these expanses in an impermeable veil of mystery. Peer too far into the depths, and you will inevitably be met with an abyss that encroaches, that suffocates, and eventually, that inters. There is no saying what will come out of the darkness, and it is this horrifying notion that has motivated many to capture the Hadal’s likeness within the safety of art.
That is not to say that the sea has only inspired tales of terror and unease. For some, it acts as a symbol of hope; a reminder that there are always new frontiers to explore, however distant they may seem. In the eyes of others, it is a source of cultural power; a phenomenon that continues to shape the mythology and folklore of indigenous communities from all around the world. Regardless of what perception we may hold, one thing is certainly clear: the sea- in all of its might, grace and glory- will continue to influence humanity, for years to come.
Our authors and artists have taken and interpreted this theme in many different contexts. Whether it be inside the literal sea, on the shore, or above it. Some have even understood it metaphorically as a symbol of unity or freedom.
With all of that said, we hope that this edition of DIVE will successfully reflect this sentiment, and that the contributions of our talented authors and artists will provide you with new interpretations of an otherwise familiar theme.
But before you start, we’d like to ask: are you ready to confront the depths, head-on? Because who knows what leviathans could be hiding within these stories…
Enjoy your DIVE (no pun intended),
