HOW TO MAKE A SNOWMAN

By Özge Bahar Ünver

In order to make a snowman, you must first have snow. Though it cannot be just any snow. The snow has to be played with before you find it. You must recognize the footprints of little kids that had a snowball fight before you got there. You must see the happiness in their bouncy and playful footsteps as they woke up late in the morning to their warm home as their mom called for them to look outside the window to watch their excitement in noticing the white blanket that has now surrounded the world. You have to use the snow that contains all the excitement, all the happiness, and all the innocence that they carry, so that your snowman will be as joyful as those little kids.

After collecting all the snow with circular motions into a round shape, you must now find a hat. A beanie that will keep this snowman warm, as winter nights become colder and colder to freeze your snowman. You must find a hat that a child will take. A hat that will keep his little ears warm, a hat that will give him a sense of happiness; a hat that he is in need of. You have to find that hat, so that your snowman will be as warm as the little kid who will take it after the snow has melted.

Now, you must make eyes, ears and a mouth for your snowman. Your snowman must become alive. He must smile to the kid that will see him driving from your street and show him to her parents with her eager tone, saying “Look mom! Look how pretty he is!” Hence, you have to pick the expression of your snowman with delicacy. You must make him reflect the happiness, the excitement, the warmth you put in him. You must align the black olives that you got from your rich breakfast table with the intricateness and attention-to-detail of a surgeon since every little smile of children matters.

Now that your snowman has a smiling face, he must also have a sympathetic stance. You must find two branches of a tree, branches that a boy accidentally broke while trying to show his dad how strong he is, branches that have seen many winters, many snowmen, many many wonderlands created by the layers of snowfall every year. You must find these branches, so that they keep inviting and welcoming children into the joy and laughter of winters; so that your snowman has the approachability of the Santa’s that work every Christmas at malls who grant every wish of every little kid.

Making a snowman is a hard job that requires a great deal of precision and carefulness but if done correctly, you end up with a snowman as happy as kids who are having a snowball fight, as warm as a boy feels after finding a beanie that will cover his ears, as happy as the girl will be after she sees him on the side of the road for a split second while driving home and as welcoming as mall Santa’s who sacrifice their Christmas’ to grant the small, innocent wishes of kids waiting to see them for hours. Then, will your snowman come alive and become a part of your winter wonderland. Then, will your snowman be worth the effort you put in making him, even though as the snow melts the next day, he will slowly melt as well, and his happiness, warmth and joy will vaporize into the air, though making the picture of a wonderland unforgettable in a child’s memory.
