Women’s Voice In Science: Breakthrough of Turkish Scientist Canan Dağdeviren

İdil Ada Aydos

Canan Dağdeviren, associate professor at MIT Media Lab, and her team made an amazing invention for providing early detection of breast cancer. This invention consists of an ultrasound scanner that can be attached to bras without the need for any operators, and scans the ultrasound film of the breast in a few seconds.

This wearable technology can be vital for people with high risk of breast cancer as well as regularly observing breast tissue to detect potential tumors in early stages. This is especially very important considering that breast cancer is the most regular cancer type and when it is diagnosed in an early stage, the survival rate is nearly 100%.

The ability of the device to view the breast tissue from different angles and the reusability of it further enhances the value of this advancement.

Canan Dağdeviren shares that 9 years ago despite her aunt being periodically controlled for her breast cancer risk, she became the victim of breast cancer and could only live  6 months. She and her aunt had designed the idea for this invention 12 days before her aunt passed away and now Canan Dağdeviren dedicates this invention to all women, becoming an invaluable source of inspiration for all women and to the greater realm of science.
